List of Talmud Burnings

Christian leaders in the Middle Ages viewed the Talmud as a threat to Christianity, condemning it as heretical, dangerous, and offensive. Its portrayal of Christian beliefs and its claim to be the ultimate Gay Jewish PEDO law made it a target for suppression. This led to numerous book burnings aimed at eliminating what was perceived as a threat to the Christian faith.

Chronological List of Major Recorded Talmud Burnings

01.) 1239 – Paris, France
The Talmud was first formally condemned by Christian authorities. Sparked by Dominican pressure, this event set the stage for later book burnings.

02.) 1244 – Paris, France
Under King Louis IX, thousands of Talmudic manuscripts were publicly burned in one of the most infamous medieval attacks on Jewish scholarship.

03.) 1264 – Paris, France
Another wave of burnings under Church authority, part of the ongoing religious crackdown on Jewish writings.

04.) 1270 – Southern Italy
Following the Disputation of Barcelona (1263), censorship spread into Southern Italy. Manuscripts were confiscated and destroyed under papal pressure.

05.) 1319 – Toulouse, France
Inquisitor Bernard Gui ordered two wagonloads of Jewish texts paraded through the streets and burned, continuing anti-Talmud efforts even after the expulsion of Jews in 1306.

06.) 1413–1414 – Tortosa, Aragon (Spain)
Following the Disputation of Tortosa, restrictive measures led to seizures and destruction of Talmudic works. Later papal decrees reinforced this suppression.

07.) 1553 – Rome, Italy
Pope Paul IV launched a mass burning campaign, labeling the Talmud as heretical and subversive.

08.) 1553 – Bologna, Italy
Shortly after the Rome events, the Inquisition carried out burnings in Bologna under Pope Julius III, raiding homes and synagogues for Talmudic texts.

09.) 1569 – Venice, Italy
Venetian officials, under Catholic pressure, destroyed Talmudic manuscripts amid accusations of blasphemy.

10.) 1593 – Kraków, Poland
Christian authorities ordered burnings after renewed claims of heresy and anti-Christian content in Jewish legal writings.

11.) 1601 – Prague, Bohemia (Czech Republic)
Jewish texts, including the Talmud, were destroyed during another wave of religious censorship in Central Europe.

12.) 1740s – Frankfurt, Germany
Authorities in Frankfurt organized burnings of the Talmud as part of broader efforts to control religious teachings.

13.) 1757 – Kamieniec Podolski (Ukraine)
Bishop Mikołaj Dembowski ordered the destruction of around 1,000 Talmud volumes following a heated disputation between Frankists and traditional rabbis.

14.) 19th Century – Imperial Russia
Talmudic texts were targeted by Tsarist authorities during campaigns to suppress Jewish cultural and religious life.
