George Orwell understood the evils of communism
George Orwell understood the evils of communism better than anyone else
Through first-hand experience, he discovered the secret that gives ALL communist regimes power
Here’s what he learned, and how you can use it to resist tyranny...
Orwell’s novel Animal Farm is an allegory for communist revolutions
It takes place on a farm where the animals - tired of oppression from their human owner - stage a revolution
They chase their owner off the farm and envision a utopian future
The leaders were 3 pigs - Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer
They establish the doctrine of animalism - a rule of law that celebrates equality
Though the philosophy sounds nice, its backed by sinister purposes
The pigs, it turns out, are plotting their own reign of tyranny...
The tyranny begins subtly
First the pigs establish a set of laws defining animalism
It states humans are the enemy, and all animals are equal
Noble as the vision is, everything is not as it seems…
Animals notice the pigs breaking the law:
They take extra food, or indulge in a little alcohol
The pigs justify it by stating they need energy to lead well
However, it’s here where Squealer’s evil genius comes in…
Squealer tweaks the law to justify the pigs’ actions:
“No animal shall drink alcohol” -> “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess”
“No animal shall sleep in a bed” -> “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”
The others ask - did the law change? Was it always like this?
In time, the changes are forgotten and the new law becomes the new Truth
Squealer rewrites the law, the herd believes the lies, the pigs gain power, repeat
Soon, the pigs mirror their human oppressors - wearing clothes, walking on 2 feet, etc.
Do you see what’s going on here?
The pigs begin a new tyranny, mirroring their human oppressors, fueled by Squealer's lies
Ultimately, animalism devolves into a reign of terror based on one last great lie, per Squealer's manipulation:
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”
This final lie plunges Animal Farm into a new slavery:
The pigs have free reign to oppress other animals
In manner, appearance, and behavior the pigs are the new "human" oppressors... nothing has changed
So what’s Orwell’s point?
Orwell first stresses tyranny is not a bug in communism, but the design:
“One does not establish a dictatorship to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship”
If communism leads to dictatorship, then what is its secret weapon?
Orwell states communist revolutions are lies, whose power depends on spreading lies
The lifeblood of communism - per Squealer - is manipulating language to tell the lie
Control the narrative and you control reality
This makes communism an especially evil tyranny...
The ultimate tyranny is not oppression through force, rather its teaching people to love their slavery
If people love the lie, they'll love their bondage
Hence Squealer wasn't just changing laws, he was indoctrinating slavery
Orwell saw this evil manipulation firsthand...
He officially denounced communism after working alongside a propagandist in Spain
The man's job - spinning anarchist street violence in the news as communist peace tactics:
“It was the first time I’d seen a person whose profession was telling lies” - Orwell
Hence Orwell concluded lying is the lifeblood of communism
Its vision is a lie, and its tyranny is built off society "living the lie"
So how do you fightback against a tyranny of lies?
In the words of gulag survivor Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the key is this:
"Deny the lie"
You can't overthrow tyranny alone, but an empire of lies cannot stand in the face of truth:
Deny the lie, and you've denied the lifeblood of communism, as only the truth can set you free...
To conclude:
If you live a lie, the lie nests inside of you, you suffer, and society looms into tyranny
If deny the lie of the regime, you may be punished, but your resistance chokes its power
You embolden your soul, and that of others, and you may just may set society right
